Hello from the Data Profession Team!

We are excited to announce the official opening of nominations for the 2024 APS Data Awards. The Awards celebrate data professionals and their outstanding data-driven initiatives. They highlight innovative and resourceful solutions implemented across the Australian Public Service (APS) that use data to make a difference to the Australian community.

We invite individuals and teams from across the APS to showcase your work and share how it has positively impacted public services and outcomes for Australians. There are eight award categories in 2024, including five modified categories and two new ones.

For more information about how to nominate visit: APSDataAwards.gov.au. Nominations close on 16 August.

Below is a summary of the current status of our projects - you can find a brief overview of our current projects in our October Team Update:

  • Expanding the Data Profession Job Role Personas (Lead – ATO) – the 12 Data Job Role personas are in the final approval stage and will be published in the coming week.
  • Review of the Data Capability Framework (DCF) and Assessment Tool (Lead – DoHAC) – recommendations from the consultation process were presented to key data agencies for feedback. The Framework will be updated before progressing to a testing phase. Work to improve self-assessment tool functionality in the APSC Career Pathfinder tool is ongoing.
  • Career Pathways for Data Professionals (Lead – AIHW) – consultation took place with key data agencies on a set of draft EL1-SESB1 technical ILS guidelines, and example pathways using the initial Data Job Role personas. Project to be finalised soon.
  • Data Leadership Course for EL2 Cohort (Lead - Data Profession) – the first ongoing course starts 19 June. Keep an eye out in the events tab and APS Academy for further course dates.
  • Data Graduate Modules (Lead – Data Profession) – deliveries for the 2024 data graduates have commenced. The Team is working to turn these modules into an eLearning format for 2025.
  • SES Data Leadership Course (Lead - Data Profession) – The final session under the current delivery schedule finishes on 14 June 2024. Future sessions of this course will be scheduled based on demand.

The Team is busy finalising the 2024-25 work program and will announce any new projects in the next update!

Each month, we publish Data Profession Spotlight articles to highlight the data careers of Data Professionals across government. Our most recent Spotlight articles include:

  •  Susie Kluth, Chief Data Officer at the Department of Education
  •  Jenny Humphrys, Chief Data Officer at the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations

In the next APS Data Capability Seminar series (25 July at 2pm AEST), Andrew Lalor (Department of Finance) and Lauren Mills (Digital Transformation Agency) will present an overview of the new Data and Digital Government Strategy and its implementation plan. Learn about the strategy, what it means for you and your agencies, how data and digital professions can work together to implement it, and how it links to other agendas including APS reform!

If you’d like to provide any feedback on this update, or volunteer for the Data Professional spotlight articles, please send us an email at dataprofession@abs.gov.au.
